Genesis of Borkar Nursing Home

A tradition of skilled medical services has been taken forward by each successive generation to reach greater number of people with an increasing number ofcompetent medical services. Three generations of the Borkar family have strived to ensure better public health and to set distinguished standards of healthcare in communities across Goa.



Dr. Atmaram Govind Borkar

Proficient obstetrician, who was Director of Health in Portuguese era in Goa, was also known for selfless community service. He was champion of Women’s education in the old era, when his own daughters studied medicine and literature. His zeal was instrumental in starting a school for girls in Panaji. His house at Panaji was like a shelter for the needy patients and students. He also played a role in freedom struggle in Goa, by supporting several freedom fighters. Prominent citizens of Panaji came forward to name a road in Panaji as Atmaram Borkar road in memory of his contribution to society.



Dr. Ramesh Atmaram Borkar

He completed his medical education in Portugal with specialisation in TB and tropical diseases. He mingled with elite but at heart nurtured respect and love for homeland, with its simple folks. He worked for TB Sanatorium at Margao and was later appointed as honorary Chairperson of Committee that looked after Hospicio hospital of Margao. Here, he was known for his service to the weaker section of society by building a team of dedicated doctors. His relationship with his patients was not merely that of a physician. He was a counsellor to them practicing holistic healing. An erudite scholar, he would quote Portuguese, and western literature with the same ease as he would recite a verse from Marathi classics.

Dr. Atmaram alias Shailesh Ramesh Borkar

Being raised in the family where two generations had selflessly served the society, his natural inclination made him opt for specialisation in gynaecology, where he won gold medal at Goa Medical College. His first service was to the rural poor and needy at remote Health Centre at Canacona, Goa. He also served as Gynaecologist at Hospicio hospital at Margao, and later started his own Borkar Nursing Home. He endeavoured to carry forward the mission of his family to make available to the common men, the best healthcare with familial warmth.
